From cattle grid at SE 740 957 follow fp along the outside of the forest down to the first gate across track. Go through gate and then turn and go 240º, keeping fence on your RHS, to first round post after the supported corner post. Box at base of this post amongst the heather. Please try not to trample heather down. Black ink needed

A Flurry of Flakes no.2 - Rudolph no.287 SE 81 97

Go around Gale Hill Point to Xtracks at SE 813 976 where deforestation starts. The track on the LHS is now disused, and has a post with two trail badges on it. The post is also currently displaying a sign saying ‘Horse Trail diverted’. Follow this old track along the edge of forest where it stops. The turn left again down the edge of the trees and down to a stile out onto the moor. (There is only a stile here, no gate) The trees should at all times be on your LHS and the deforested area on your RHS. From stile go 290º 20p to huge horizontal boulder, then 300º 6p to box under another slightly smaller horizontal boulder behind forest debris. Red Ink needed .A Tortoise Pride and Joy Stamp

From Rudolph, return to the main forest ride and continue past deforested area to fp on left. Fp sign also marked ‘Horse Trail’ Go down this fp, keeping trees on your RHS this time and deforested area on your LHS, to stile and gate out onto the moor. Go to 3ft stump 240º 13p from gate. Stand facing stump with back to moor. Box on RHS of stump, at base under rotting log slice, covered with grass. Green and Red ink needed

From Sutton Bank follow signs pointing towards Sneck Yate towards the NW direction. Follow path to first bench where there is an old broken lookout stand. From the Righthand corner of bench at a 100 degree bearing, go 10 paces to base of many limbed birch. Box #1 is hidden snugged in root fork, under branch and rock.

Continue down path until corner of horse field is visible. Go to second tree on Right down along the side of the path. Behind it to the Right side in the pile of loose rocks at base of derelict wall in pile of loose rocks is Box #2.

Continue along path to a signpost saying 'for your safety keep to the path.' About 11 paces past this sign there is a fir/pine tree on the Right. Behind the trunk on the Left side under rocks is Box #3.

To find a black hole you need to eat a black pudding. Rejoin main track beside a pile of stones and go 140p 210o to track on L. Next 11p 80o followed by 18p 224o to box behind stones under boulder on L.

Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Nidderdale No:306

From Scarhouse reservoir walk easterly along the Nidderdale way to Firth Plantation. Find the gateway in the wall along the eastern edge of the plantation. From the only gatepost stride on 180° for 35 paces to oak tree, then on 340° 6 paces up hill box is in small group of lichen covered stones under flat stone.

"In the dark, working hard, loading up the wooden cart,

From these words go initially on 120o, 200p along track to horseshoe shaped dip on R. Then 24p 200o to protruding stone in center. Box is hidden behind heathernto the R of this protruding stone under satones. Now contain New Improved Stamp! Yellow, Orange & Green inks needed.

From were the amazing sculpture at a viewpoint cp once stood, go to nearest trig pilar. Cont along track to the 1st gateway on R. From here go 69p 55 degrees sto dead twin tree on R, then a further 210p to birch on R. Finally 210 degrees, approx 4p to box under stones beneath lowest ledge in rock face.

From trig. station on Rudland Rigg, walk about 200p in a southerly direction along Westside Road. (An obvious group of boulders should be visable on your left). Then 47p to large lone boulder at southern end of largest group of boulders. Next 16p 20o to box under small rock. From box Lion Inn, Blakey 38o.

Bee Chase Series. Explorer 289 or Landranger 105 but not essential. 3 miles east of Wetherby, the pesky insects have escaped from the village of the keepers. Can you track them down? (A pleasant 5 mile walk on arable land.)  THE BEE CHASE SERIES HAS BEEN TEMPORARY TAKEN IN DUE TO A COUPLE OF BOXES BEING EXPOSED. THEY WILL BE RELOCATED WITH NEW CLUES SHORTLY.

From the village phonebox, walk west along the lane for half a mile. Just after the hedges stop, you come to a point (SE 442 506) where a bridleway goes off to the right. From here, head 220o along lane to a footpath post on the left. Walk 20 paces along footpath. Look under small stone slab on left at the base of the hedge.

Return to grid reference and head 320o along bridleway, then along green lane a short distance. Take bridleway on left until the path comes out of the trees and zig-zags. From the square bridleway post, walk back along the path 24 paces to a point between two hawthorn trees. Look in log pile at 300o, 5 paces.

Follow the footpath W to  just before the farm, where you can pick up a recently added "rubble/tile" road (not shown on older maps) It takes you north of the farm to some large metal gates. Follow the lane N, then footpath E round the edge Oates Wood until you pass through the hedge/fence. Take 10p further, turn left, go over the ditch on the earth bridge into the wood. Go 22p to tree at 320o. Go 14p to tree at 290o. Go 23p to tree at 330o. Go 22p to forked tree at 320o. Look around tree base

Let's give them a home. Counting the gates that you pass through as you go, head SE along lane to junction, then S along lane back to the village. Stop after you pass through the 2nd gate. Carefully find the roots of the tree, then look in loose brickwork.

Beehive Box No:101 REPORTED WATERLOGGED

Follow forest side of wall at SE 7428 9545, on 40o to corner. Next 158p 120o to 12th bushy rowan tree. Box lodges in bottom of minor branches surrounding main trunk. (Beehives are kept on moor side of wall during summer.)

Best Friends No:197 Reported OK 12/9/06

The best friends have branched over to see Jenny and her daughter Tib in Nidderdale.Continue easterly on track past gated shooting lodge where you can view J & T. Continue on this easterly track to boundary stone on right, here take track due south 290 paces, then from track 115 degrees 140 paces to outcrop. Box underneath tallest east facing boulder behind several small stones.

Bird Box SE 71 93 No:85 Reported good condition 13/10/07 though post no longer there.

From large lone tree near roadside just N of Spindle Thorn, go about 260p on 57o to first post (not visable from tree). Then 301o 58p to upright boulder and finally 21p on 331o over large flat boulder to box under sloping rock. From box Ana Cross bears 55o, tree near roadside bears 220o and large tree is just visible on 173o.

Bird of Paradise no.290

From cattle grid at SE 740 957, follow fp along the outside of the forest down to the stile in the corner, where track enters forest. Cont. over stile on fp to first ride on L. From the 1st tree on W corner of this ride go 2p N to protruding horizontal tree trunk. Find hole under W side sawn off end of trunk. Box under bark camouflage, in this hole. Pink, Pale Blue, Pale Green and Grey ink needed

Box 100 No:100 Refurbished and resited.

Start at the "Sculpting" which has lasted longer than the "Sculpture", make your way back up the hill and along the bank top to trig point. Continue forward to parking area with wnderful view, then forward again along track to concrete foundations on LHS. From fp corner of Northern end of concrete go 5p 60o to box behind stones beneath concrete where fern is growing. Take care not to trample camouflaging fern (and in Summer - nettles). Purple and Green ink needed.

From stile at SE 747 960 go 34p 254º to small holly growing on the opposite side of the fence on your R. Stand facing holly, box at base of 1st RH post, under conifer and heather cover.

From fp sign at NZ 758 013 go to corner of forest. Counting the corner post of fencing as 1, go to 5th post in a NW’ly direction. Box at base of this post, amongst heather, on forest side of fence. Please replace any heather trampled down when getting this box.

Box Hunting no 3 - Shoebox No:302

From gateway out onto the moor at SE 5685 8930, follow new fencing on LHS of track to corner post. Follow fencing around corner for 8 paces, again with fencing on LHS, to 2 horizontal trunks on RHS. Standing with your back to the fence, box is under the RH end of the trunk at the back, covered with leaves and bilberry. Red, black, brown and sky blue inks needed.

Box Hunting! no.4 - Horsebox  no:310 SE 61 88

From forest gate in car park, follow track to 1st main junc. of tracks on a bend. Go due S to gate. Next 110º 61p to group of 4 old silver birches in bank on R, just before collapsed wire fencing. Stand with silver birches and track in front of you. Notice the twin-trunked silver birch in the centre of the group. There is a hole against the trunk, RHS of this tree. Box in hole, camouflaged with forest debris.

Box Hunting! No.5 - Letterbox no:311

From truncated cross at SE 60 98 follow track N'ly to fork. Take R fork and go 255p to huge boulder on R. Cont., passing several large boulders on the R, noticing especially the two prone slabs now used to bridge the ditch on this same side. Continue on to the second of next two large boulders on R. This boulder is pear shaped and the last within sight on this side of the track. Stand between ditch and boulder, box under boulder on LHS. When replacing, please tuck into the left side of the hole.

Bridging the Pond - UK No:347

From bridge SE 71 91 follow the track beside the water upstream, to the second of two holly trees. From here cont. about 470p along the track to the first two trees on RHS of path (rather than near the stream). Stand in middle of the two trees with your back to stream. Box is under the middle of a large boulder entwined in the roots of the LHS tree.

This stamp was planted to celebrate the connections between Yorkshire letterboxing and Conneticut where American letterboxing began. N.B. British Wildlife: Otter No:348

Having established that the fairies are still calling after all these years, the otter swam upstream to the bridge. From there he followed the track first to a holly tree on this side of the beck, then to a large holly tree on the opposite side of the beck. He continued roughly 470p to two trees, an Alder and Hawthorne, keeping each other company on the RHS of the path. Next he went 38p along track to a single Alder on the RHS. Lastly 33p along track to a nearly dead hawthorne on the L with a broken limb. Near base of trunk are two boulders. Box under LHS boulder, behind moss on the RHS of the fern growing from under the middle of it.

British Wildlife : Wildcat No:349

From Sutton Bank car park, follow path pointing towards Sneck Yate in a NW direction. Continue down path, passing through a wooded section keeping small lake on your left. When you come out of the wooded section and appear to be passing the lake, you will come to a wooden gate on your right where two stone walls meet in somewhat of a 'T'. On opposite side of the gate from the path there is a signpost saying Bridleway - Dialstone Farm . Behind this signpost, in corner where the two walls meet, is the box you seek. It is hidden at the base under a pile of loose rocks

Bugs Trail 1 Orb Weaver Spider No:245Reported OK 12/8/08

Take the footpath from Bridgehouse gate in Patley Bridge. Go through the gate following the footpath to the corner of an old useless wall. Then take 21 paces uphill to holly. Box is under a moss covered stone. From box, Patley Bridge Church is at 80 degrees. Comment received: Very few visitors, unlike others in series. If you come to corner of wall with small gate you have gone too far up path by about 50 ft.

From Orb Weaver Spider continue up hill until the footpath meets the Nidderdale Way. find the 4 way marker signpost. From here

take the track southerly for 55 paces, then 9 paces on 285 degrees. The box is well hidden under moss in the south end of a moss cover tree stump.

From the footbridge on the footpath from Hillend to Throstlenest, Follow the river downstream to rowan tree on the right. Then take 42 paces on 110 degrees to large moss covered bulders. Box behind moss covered stone between two laqrge long boulders. Report received: Confusion over bridge. Ignore stone clapper bridge and continue along path to field into woods to wood bridge.

Is by the side of Ashfold side beck on the other side of the beck from the mine. Find two large beech trees above rocy bank. The box is between the two trees in the rocky bank below the tree roots, behind 3 small stones.

Butterfly ( I ) No:255

Head for Combe's Crag in the hills above Nidderdale and find an 8 foot leaning stone on the opposite side of the crag to the building. From this stone, take 18 paces on 120 degrees to find box under boulder.

Butterfly ( II ) SE 49 90 No:258

From shaft of cross large fallen ancient tree due E. Make your way to this tree which is in the company of two other trees. With your back to the cross the trees are on the RHS of the wall. From roots of fallen tree go 7p 35 degrees to lazy hawthorn tree with stones at foot of trunk. Box underneath largest stone at foot, on the same side of the hawthorn as the roots of fallen tree. Purple ink needed.

Camper on the Moor No:332

The camper had stayed overnight at High Yedmandale and joined the Teddy Bears where they had been partying for many years. The search for the box begins at Highwood Brow car park, where some letterboxers like to feed the birds. From here head off down the track initially on 80 degrees for a good stroll. Pass a Tabular Hill walk marker post and a circular no vehicle sign on the left. Continue to a 2nd Tabular Hill walk marker post at a X tracks. From this post take the track initially on 90 degrees for approx 400 paces to a grass ride on 180 degrees. Walking down the ride immediately on the left you will see a wire fence. The box is at the  right hand side of the 3rd fence post behind a gnalled gorse bush.

Start where the Lyke Wake Walk crosses the North York Moors Railway. Walk east over bridge and along some concrete sleepers to 2nd hand gate. Walk 80 paces up a stony track to path junctions. Walk 100 paces on 314 degrees to large Rowan tree, then 25 paces on 310 degrees to rocky outcrop on right. Box on south side under large top piece.

Captain Cook Series-The First Voyage NZ 59 11 No:158 Reported in good condition 3/10/05. But found under single flat stone 5 paces short of the 20 reported no book, but stamp OK

From the car park at NZ 593 110 follow the Cleveland Way North, up the steps. Follow the wall on your left for about 350 p to a gate through the wall. Pass through gate into the forest. The Box is under a pile of stones and pine needles 20p South of the gate alongside the wall.

Captain Cook Series-The Second Voyage NZ 59 10 No:159 Reported in good condition 3/10/05

From the cattle grid at the car park at NZ 593 110 ignore the Cleveland Way path to the south, but instead follow a well marked path south up the side of the hill about 100 yards to the right of the forest.Near the top of the hill go left to a small dell with rocky outcrops on the south wall. The box is half way up the south wall on the left hand side of the dell in a small cave.

From Cook's Monument head 187 paces in a North Westerly direction to two upright gate posts. Then follow the edge of the escarpment 138 paces South along a path. Turn right and descend 20 paces to a large rock. The box is under a large , flat , sloping rock 5 paces to the right and 5 paces up hill from the large rock.

Follow main track initially in a Southerly direction past "Horse and Dog"'s ride. Continue along track up hill and round corner to bend where ride goes North. Go along ride for about 70p to dead trunks on left side. Looking West box under trunks on left, best retrieved from back of pile.

Christmas Box No:209 Reported OK 4/1/06

Seasons Greetings from Best Friends. Go to the shooting house at SE 107 753. From the tower head north 50 paces, then follow the path initially west downhill 100 paces. Leaving the path the box is on 140 degrees and approx 30 paces. The box is snug in it's hole behind a 12-14 inch stone. From box tower of shooting house 70 degrees and largest boulder at 130 degrees 8 paces away. The box can be linked with Best Friends for a good seasonal walk.

Along the railway line at Bloworth Crossing, stand at the hinge of the most E'ly gate. Look in heather clump at 348o for pile of rocks (please recover box carefully).

Cod  SE 47 99 No:304

From footbridge, take track up to corner of forest. Go 160º to 2nd ancient tree growing outside the forest fence. From tree 6p 144º to large flat boulder. Note 3 smaller boulders, next to large boulder, running in a line on 268º. Box in crevice under 2nd of these small boulders hidden by stone and foliage. Sky blue ink needed

Compass No:264 Put out for International Plant a Mystery Box Day 7 Oct 2006 Reported OK 13/10/07

Avoiding the hellhole, take your COMPASS bearing from this C Y SNAKES COME PAST and walk on 350 degrees down the track, to gate into the forest. From here 40 degrees to round wooden post by the wooden fence. Then 340 degrees past small hawthorne on your left to large hawthorne then 160 degrees to end of old disused wall. Box is under a pile of stones ath the end of the fallen wall, the top stone of which is marked with a small grey circle of lichen.

Cooper Cross Put out for International Plant a Letter Box Day 24 May 2007 No 301 Reported OK 13/10/07

On the Cleveland way south of Boltby Scar follow the bridle path sign posted to Boltby. Take the bridle path down and through the gate, then go 21 paces on 210° to disused fence post with large sycamore close by. Then on 320° 2 paces to fallen wall box under moss covered rocks.

After visiting Man's Best Friend return to the gate, back along the track on initially 196o 112p to small sheep's track on R. Then about 70p 277o down to two extra large flat stones. From between these stones 17p 160o. Box under prone stone.

Walk up Rudland Rigg to track on RHS, opposite wall at top of hill. Follow track with grouse butts on L over hill to rock with white inverted V on RHS past butt 6. Box under.

Starting at the bridge at SE713 911, walk up the road to a footpath sign on the right. Follow the footpath for approx 180p to the corner of the fence. Then go 24p on 295o to box under stone in the root of a tree.

Deer No:217 Reported OK 12/9/06

High above Nidderdale, walk down the grassy footpath to Combs Crags until a front door is spotted for the first time. Then head 85o to an 8 foot high, leaning triangular rock (just beyond an imminent rockslide). Standing underneath this pointy stone, head 25o to two adjacent upright slender stones abot 15p away. Walk into the grass gap adjacent to the right stone. Crouch down and reach out for the box.

Drum No:212

Start at the top of the railway incline, by the stone blocks that made up the drum-house foundations. Then find the square metal bar, as thick as your arm. Look under the adjacent large boulder. Pictures and facts about the site to be found in box too. "Summit" is in view.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, 50th Anniversary, 1956-2006  SE 830 981 Box no:228

Just out-a new box to celebrate the 50th anniv of the DofE Award Scheme. From large cairn at Simon Howe, walk 53 paces on 035 degrees. Box under rock, 4th in line from Howe. From box you can see The Saltergate Inn on 160o, trig point on 062o and Wheeldale Plantation on 029o. Simon Howe is a regular feature on many DofE expeditions.

Easter Box No:220 Reported OK 12/9/06

We Deerly wish you a Happy Easter at Combs Crags. From the 8 foot leaning stone take 20 paces on 105 degrees to find the box under large heather covered rock.

Eastern Moors Cuckoo Nest no (296 ) SE 9-- 9-- Reported OK 13/10/07

This the second of a new type of letterbox - A Cuckoo Nest! (Instructions enclosed in box)

Find the cp from where the Reasty Blue Man likes to begin his walk. Follow the main road in a S'thly direction to second little cp area on R. From rounded end of parking area take track on 320º 90p to Y junc. Take RH track again on 320º 26p to prone trunk on RHS. Now cont. 320º 18p to upright stump on RHS. Stand facing cp on 180º with stump and root hump in front of you. A silver birch is growing out of the LHS of the hump. Box is in a hole in the side of the root hump roughly between the stump and the silver birch.

Please replace the box carefully as you find it on the LHS of the hole. Do not push it too far back as the box might fall right into the roots.

Fairy Box SE __ __ No:67 Box reported OK after all 5/10/06

Can you hear the fairies calling downstream? Follow beck to stone wall corner. from here go on 3o and about 28p to water. Cross to 2 trees on opposite bank. From double stake in fence on 55o go L to 7th. stake. Box in roots of ancient hawthorne on L just in front of stakes. (Wellies essential, and the crossing is not possible after heavy rain.)

Fairies Parlour  no 307 Reported OK 13/10/07

This Fairy is in the parlour studying the clues list. From Sutton Bank Visitor Centre head along the Cleveland way in a North Westerly direction follow the signpost towards Sneck Yate to The Fairies Parlour. Continue along the Cleveland Way to a bridle path sign to Dialstone House; go along this bridle path to the next signpost close to the gallops. Then look on 240º to corner of old wall close to fir tree. From this tree 110º box is 1 stride away at base of old wall behind stones.

This is a quiet (word of mouth) box. Ask a tortoise for the clue!

From the car park at NZ 593110, follow the Cleveland Way north up the steps. Follow the wall for approx 350p to gate into forest. From gate take 85p along path on 130o to a sheeptrod on the left. Follow sheeptrod north 49p towards tumulus. Then 5p 70o to prone stone-box underneath.

Sheriffs Pit Shaft-SE 699 963. From gate to shaft go anticlockwise to 6th. concrete post. Then 345o about 58p to patch of rubble. From N end of this patch 33p along bank top. Box 2p down, on 245o in rubble next to heather at end of ditch. Remains of old wall on 162o.

On track near Horse and Dog look for wooden signpost (Wass Wanderers Way). From post go to large pine tree 35p north, then cross track on 060° to another large pine. Box now 5p 120° pushed well back under sawn off branch.

Find plantation where songs are sug and sermons told. Starting at letterbox, cross and walk down road to fp on RHS. Follow fp to ford. Cross ford then take fp (track) on LHS, which meanders close-ish to stream and along to Old Fold. Cont on fp around the corner of Old Fold wall to the right, on to and through gate. Keeping old wall on LHS 62 p to brake/end of wall with large holly. Next 137p to ruins of old wall on RHS which runs over and downhill. From fp end of this wall 190 degrees 4p to large old silver birch with roots in yet another wall. Standing facing tree and with broken down wall directly behind you box is LHS of trunk in hole camouflaged with dead leaves/twigs. Green, pink and purple ink needed.

This rabbit thinks he is a hare and has flown up to Yorkshire in Charlie 130. He went to the Lion Inn because he knew a Tortoise had been there (in 1990) from Inn Cross Road to Signpost th Rosedale rail and follow to track. From the signpost back to Lion Inn the box is hidden behind a rock in the heather approx 45 paces on 220 degrees.

At NZ 840 031 take track into Whinstone Ridge Quarry. Turn L and follow track in quarry bottom to where sheer rock faces are high on both sides. Continue on until track turns up in filled crossing. From crossing note group of rocks on 110º. Go to these rocks, returning via quarry bottom track. Whilst still in quarry bottom note two large boulders with smaller 3rd boulder bridging the gap between these two about 8paces up. A small fern is growing between. Box behind RHS boulder under stones.

A lighthouse in Nidderdale, unlikely you may think, but study your map closely and you will find Light Hill. Only a couple of miles northerly from here is a gate in a wall at SE 147 725. From hinge side of gate the Lighthouse box is 15 paces on 250° under stone at front of old wall.

From neerg eldraw snaimer go S along fp to useless stile, then L through gate to stile at broken corner of fence. Now find 2nd conifer tree N along fence. Stand facing trunk of tree and fence. On RHS of tree at base find top stone next to trunk, covered in forest debris. Box behind this stone.

From where the wind doth blow walk down to Cinderhill Wath. Follow stream in N'thly direction, sometimes up and sometimes down, passing old trees and on to knobbly old fence post beside old wall which crosses the track. Continue following stream and down into old quarry. Next on to two trees with ruined wall beside stream. Now back due S 50p to fallen tree. Box 10p on your R in hole under boulder.

Moor Activities - Picnic No:342

This clue starts at the site of a long established picnic area, first used for picnics when the first cars were seen on the North Yorks Moors. However, if you want to have a picnic in a less busy area go Westerly from the footbridge in the car park at Hob Hole. Follow the Baysdale Beck up stream across a tributary and on to a pair of disused old stone gateposts. From here continue on the path past a lone tree on the right. Continue on this path until you can see a group of trees mainly of oak and silver birch on the hillside on your right. Make your way to the eastern edge of this group of trees, to a leaning Y shaped oak. From this tree head approx 50 paces on 265 ° to silver birch (please be careful). From here the box is 2 paces away at the westerly side of a small cave behind a mossy stone.

Moors Activities - Sandwich Wandering Box No:343

Having found the picnic box now find the sandwich which is close by. Return to the leaning Y shaped oak. Now go 26 paces on 240 ° to find your sandwich above a leaning tree, under a stone slab, behind a mossy rock. Enjoy!!

Moor Activities – Rail Enthusiast No:350 Planted for Plant a Letterbox Day 24 May 2009 NB CLUE MODIFIED FROM "HEAD WESTERLY" TO "HEAD EASTERLY"

From the level crossing at Levisham station head Easterly along the road up the hill, to the first public footpath sign on the right. From here head directly to the box for approx 335 paces on 285°. The box can be found under the northwesterly corner of a small sloping stone behind three small stones. The box is just before the path that follows the valley on the brow and about 13 paces away, close to a group of silver birch on the left. The rail track can still be seen in the distance heading along the valley on 170°, and the farm on top of the hill is on 260°. Please re-cover carefully.

From the single bar gate at the entrance to the car park at the ancient Roman Campsite at Cawthorn, head northly up the green lane to the five bar gate. Go through and follow the fence line easterly to corner and a further gate. From here head northly To corner of fence then easterly continuing to the next single gate which is 15 paces before a 5 bar gate. From the single bar gate go 34 paces on 260 degrees to a Y shaped silver birch. The box is in the root of this tree behind a sawn pine trunk, under two pieces of bark.

Moorland Mysteries no 1 No:115 The forest is currently undergoing harvesting and there is currently no right to roam in this area. The box will be refurbished when harvesting completed.

The question is wo stole the contents? from here go down wide ride almost opposite until it meets main forest road. Turn R and go 155p to large concrete block on LHS, then 40o to smaller of 2 non-coniferous trees. next 4p 310o followed by 10p 50o to box at base of twin trunked pine on R.NB the twin trunked pine has fallen.

Walk quietly past the baby bird and continue down for a game of cards. Take track initially on 300o towards the top of the hill. At junc of paths beside lg silver birch on R (Which is the second silver birch on R) take L track, initially on 280o approx 35p to hugh pointed slab jutting out from heather. From far side of slab point box is 6p N behind stones under boulder.

Moorland Mysteries no 3 No:112 Reported in good condition 1/6/07 NB Shooting hide 1 has fallen and one post remains un-numbered on the ground. There are remains of numbered shooting post 2 on ground. Shooting post 3 in good condition and is the only one you can see above the heather.

Find a valley which begins with Chestnut, Rowan, Alder and Beech. From existing box, follow track which heads in a N'ly direction from the 2 boulders. keep to this track for about 330p which should bring you out level with shooting hde 1 on your L. Remaining on this track cont. to NW rock fae of small quarry on 310o. Box under semi-prone boulder at base of L side of rock face, behind stones.

Moorland Mysteries no 4 No:128 Reported OK 5/10/06Find the eminence where the pauper who married a prince might be found-providing she hasn't blown away! From disused pits follow main track down the gill and cross. Take the small track on 336o, initially beside the stream, but then following upwards to the smout hole in the ruined wall. Next 350o along the fence, passing old trees and on to knobbly old fence post beside the old wall across the track. Now go 6o, after a short way picking up a small track down into the old quarry and on to lazy rowan tree beside the gill. Lastly 7p 210o to box behind stones under top boulder which is marked with a largish grey circle.

The western law keeper stumbled into the crater. Picking himself up, he placed a danger sign, then turned around and walked over to the large upright structure. Next he went 250o 140p up the track and 10p to cairn on L. Walking 63p due S brought him to a small group of boulders. Box under boulder behind smaller stones on North side of group. Mouse Put out for International Plant a Letter Box Day 24 May 2007 No 300

After visiting the White Horse(Box) the mouse went towards home along the Cleveland Way. Heading south from High Barn to gate in wall, go to right of gate along the wall, stand where corner of wall has fallen looking over quarry. From here on 345° see pile of stones, make your way as best you can to these stones. On finding these speckled pile of stones the mouse is hiding under the 2 top most rocks and under further small stones. From box High Barn can be seen on 350°

From junc. at SE 954 890 follow  "Unsuitable for motor vehicles" track on 320o, past tulley tubes to fork at end. Next take track on 10o, 30p to lone rowan tree on LHS. Stand with this rowan tree behind you and go 8p 50 degree across grassy mounds to muti-trunked silver birch tree between multi-trunked rowan tree and large twin silver birch trees. Go directly behind multi-trunked silver birch tree so you are facing the track. Box at the base of this tree, lightly covered by leaves. Blue, Black, Brown and Orange colours needed.

Wondering where to go REG READ NEW List of clues. He decided to start at the gate out onto the moor and went 180o to stile with blue/yellow sign. From here he continued up the track a short way to disused stone gateposts. Next he went 95o to the 2nd. tree along the old stone wall. He found the box in the stump entangled in the remains of this old hawthorn.

From the goose's cp the panther stealthily prowled down the track on 110o to the wooden gate. He then crept undercover 5p 20o to triple trunks of very old conifer tree. He stood facing the 3 trunks, with boughs going up and over behind him. The single trunk on the LHS has a stump attached to it. Box behind the stump amongst the bilberry and covered with pine needle camouflage. Brown and grey ink needed. Planted for International Mystery Box Planting Day.

Go to bank edge which is 13p S.Box is W 12p. From box: Tall lone sapling 10p 138o, lone tree on other side of gill 240o, corner of forest 210o.

Two toads that have headed west from their original location. From bridge, head 15 degrees up to rocks. Head right to jutting out rectangular 4 foot high rock at end. Hidden in N side under bracken and stones.

Betwixt Kirby Malzeard and Ramsgill, where McAdam ceases to exist, there is just north of this point an old small circular fence around mystery hole (rain gauge). From this fence go 30 paces at 48 degrees This creature comfort is under boulder; the White Shooting Lodge 15degrees, gap in wall of field on edge of moor 115 degrees.(Note do not venture off the paths and on to this part of the moor during April May or June or whilst a shooting is taking place)

At box, chimney on white house is on a bearing of 90 degrees, lone tree 320 degrees, Clump of trees 170 degrees. When replacing box be careful not to push box to far into the crevice

From where Billy Goat Gruff met the Troll, walk SW along the road for about 100 yrds before striking out S across the moors to a line of shooting butts which lie on an east west line Follow the butts eastwards to No 9. Just east of No 9 there is a plank across a very small stream. Cross stream and keeping stream on left walk to 10 and then north for 60 paces to outcrop of rocks on the RHS. Go around the rear of the last boulder and look south where you will see Rocky’s hiding place. Rocky is on top of the second from last large boulder under a 6” thick sloping slab behind a small loose rock. White shooting lodge is 4 degrees

Rocky is looking for Ginger but Ginger is separated from Rocky by a hazardous ravine with North Gill Beck in the bottom. Ginger is on a horizontal ledge under a medium rock behind some stones, next to a small cave where one person could shelter from the weather. Rocky is 330 feet at 185 degrees. Silver birch tree by culvert under road is 20 degrees and approximately 50 feet. Large rock left of a tree along the valley is 100 degrees

Near 'Near Toady Bank' a monument to the Oliver Degrey 2nd Marquess of Ripon who is claimed to be the best shot in England is sited. Brave Bigwig and the prophet Fiver knew it was not worth shooting a rabbit at close quarters as there would not be not much left to eat so they hid under the Marquess feet. They hid down a hole blocked by a stone 2 paces on 300 degrees from Marquess. The monument is best approached along the track to the grouse butts which starts at the road 50m west from the foot path sign

Between mast and trig point at 16 62, with mast at 80 degrees, trig at 230 degrees and golf balls at 160 degrees. In group of boulders under sloping rock. Box 150 paces from nearest point of path. Suggested change to clue by visitor to box- change trig at 230 and golfballs at 160 to trig at 235 degrees and RHS golf balls at 155 degrees and add Outstanding tree this side of wood 318 degrees.

Find the tower in the quarry above Scar house reservoir. From the middle wooden pole on the Southern side of the tower, go 37 paces to a square rock with small horns. Then go 21 paces on 90 degrees to a small hollow. Box is plugged at the base of a large boulder with a gorse patch on top.

North Yorkshire Moors no:309 There has been some deforestation and the holy is now gone. New clue:

From Gallops (box) head southerly along path to ungated gateway where the path meets the woods. From here go 16 paces on 200 degrees to track into the woods, head along the track 38 paces to 2nd large stump on left, now go 10 paces on 100 degrees to young rowan. Box is under moss and flat stone at the base of this tree.

Old Man of New Hampshire,The SE --- --- no.(297) GAQLE2007

A letterbox sent by Six Stars, all the way from New Hampshire, USA and planted as part of The Great Atlas Quest Letterbox Exchange 2007.

Do not begin at a rail fence, but rather at teitmolncoshsxhoradrs. From here continue up the ditch, past the next tree to a lazy branch between the 6th and 7th hawthorn trees. The box is lodged just behind the branch, roughly half way along at the Y junc. It is accessed from the top, and not from under the branch. It is covered in fern debris.

From the tower in the quarry with the carriage axel with 2 wheels still attached, above the site of the old Scar house village. Follow the track easterly, past a pyramid rock which could be mistaken for a trig, follow this track around hillock to old grouse butt which is above several large boulders that form a small wall. From this butt go down 5 paces on 210°. Box behind small door under the eagle head rock, on side of grassy bank.

From 2nd. large concrete boulder on L, with pipe across track, go 20p 240o to rectangle slab of concrete. Next 140o 16p to slab with red brick showing, then 10p 30o to box at lower RH edge of large semi prone concrete slab.

Rainbow End N.Y.Moors No:148 Reported in good condition 27/5/06

This box has been put out to establish a link between letterboxes on Dartmoor and N.Y.Moors. From box, Wheeldale YHA 216o , Hazel Head Farm 300o and lone tree is 250o 24p. Box behind stones under large boulder.Additional clue from Rainbow Enders: GPS SE 81757 99075. If you park beside the road near turning bay look uphill & you can see lone tree mentioned in clue.

From gate into forest at SE 607 906 take the LH ride down to small bridge. From LHS of bridge a twin trunked silver birch is approx. 15p 146º. Make your way to this twin trunked tree and stand facing it with the stream behind you. Box is in the LHS root of the LHS trunk under forest debris beneath rotting log.

Rosedale Chimney Bank Box SE 721 948 No:10 Reported OK 21/4/2006 Minor amendment to clue regarding the gully bottom.

Back on the Moor at last! Original (waterlogged) book dried out & replaced, as per Judith's wishes from the last time it became waterlogged! Still readable & nice to see who's visited over the years.

From stones marked "No Cars Beyond Here" go along track 123p to a short track on R leading to a gully. Box under stone half way along W bank of gully, 52p from end of gully. Blue ink needed.

Scar house no:317

From main car park at Scar house reservoir, once parked walk back to the vehicle entrance where concrete turns to tarmac. Head on ungated track on 110° which starts between 2 gated tracks. Pass 5 foot wooden post on left up steep hill towards quarry. Go to the tower at the entrance of the quarry, at the front of the tower you will find a carriage axel with 2 wheels still attached. From here go 69 paces on 235° to a corrugated stone slab by a metal plate with three bolts. From here go 11 paces on 220° . The box is under sloping slab behind double door.

 Scout Centenary Series. Boxes 1 to 10 now on the moors, Christmas Box and Best Friends can be found along the route and others are near by. All the boxes have been visited this spring (2009) and found OK except for wolf cub which was wet so the box owner has used a better box with a seal on the lid, replaced the log book and repaired the stamp.

Scout Centenary series No 1 Boy Scout 1907- 1967 renamed Scout - to present No 321

This the first of a series of boxes put out in Nidderdale to celebrate the Centenary of the Scouting Association. Following the green roads, foot paths and the Nidderdale Way with slight deviations to find boxes a circular walk but strenuous can be achieved. Parking is difficult at Ramsgill - layby at SE113722. The route can be done with care for clues in any direction starting at any point.

From Bouthwaite near Ramsgill head east climbing to 234m. Just before metal gate there is an 18 inch cube rock. Box is 15 paces on 355o from rock under small flat stone. Ramsgill church 242o

From Wolf Cub, continue North uphill, until after approximately 0.8km (half a mile), look to the west and on the ridge look for a boundary stone and rock,which looks like a stand at a stadium, when these two are in line leave the path the box is under the rock, covered with heather approx 30 paces from the path and 36 paces from the stream. Bearing to distinctive rock which looks like a stage.and a pillar on the ridge 300

Scout Centenary Series No 4 Senior Scout 1946 To 1967 No 324

From Rover Scout continue along the path to the junction of another path coming from the west, follow this path westerly until you reach a shooting lodge

This box is located near the shooting lodge at SE 13008 74607, this has a cat on the one end, (refer to Beaver Scout in same series). Look for the small car park at the side of the track, which is closed by a black gate. The box is located by a small drainage ditch, where the banks are built with old wall stones. From the western side of the gate walk 10 paces in a westerly direction, look under the flat stones.

. Along the green lane to the east there is another track that heads north with black metal gate near a parking area. Proceed along that track till you see a flat stone 21 paces to the right. The box is under a small stone near the rock. There are badges within the box, please take one. Combs Crag Shooting Houses 64 degrees, White pole inline with B&BP Lodge 238 degrees and radio mask at Greenhow 212 degrees

Scout Centenary Series No 6 Venture Scouts  No:326

This will be found at ABJJD QDHJA for those with a GPS or KLT QNR for those not so affluent The box is hidden in a small hole behind several small stones on the east face of a small disused quarry, approximately 2/3 way up the slope. A gate on the track will be found 110paces away in a westerly direction from the quarry entrance

Scout Centenary Series No 7 Explorer Scout No:327

Explorer Scout was set up to replace Venture Scout so from the Venture Scout box progress west through the gate, across the road, through another gate and along the track keeping the wall on the LHS. Where the wall turns away from the track count the post in the wall going down hill, including the one on the corner. From the 7th post take 5 further steps along the wall before strike off at right angles for 11 paces. The box is above a small boulder in the grassy bank behind a small stone just before a small cube rock. The clock tower is at 14 degrees

Scout Centenary Series No 8 Harrogate And Nidderdale District Scouts (HANDS) SE 10??? 75??? No:328

From the tower walk on 355 degrees along path slightly down hill across a small stream and a boggy area to a clump of boulders on the RHS At the first stack of 3 large boulders you will find the box on a shelf between the 1st and 2nd one, behind some loose stones. Windmill above trees on 260 degrees and upper edge of conifer plantation 200 degrees. Make sure the boulders are correctly replaced so persons coming down path cannot see the white of the box.

Scout Centenary Series No 9 County Badge SE 10??? 75??? No:329

From HANDS return to the main track Continue north to where the track turn slightly to the right and goes up a steep incline. Leave the path to the left at the top of the steep section (just before the second large boulder on the RHS) and go to an area of disused shafts. Stop in a small dip with bog type grass about 25m from main track between large boulders The box is under the south end of a block 3ft x 6ft x 10 ft of rock which is on the west side of the dip. Middlesmoor Church tower 228 degrees and How Gill House with white door and clump of trees in garden 274 degrees. Remove stones at front, not top, to reach into hole to get box. Care when replacing not to push box to far back into crevice

Scout Centenary Series No 10 World Badge SE 10??? 76??? No:330

Return to the main track and continue north to where walls meet and there is a fenced section with galvanised iron sheets and sheep wire. Follow the wall on RHS southwards for 43 paces to the disused quarry. Box is in steep east side of quarry amongst loose stones just below the collapsed wall. A long 3ft stone near top of bank points down to it and box is about 5ft from the lower end of this stone.

This is the northern end of the trail so if you have started near Ramsgill you can return by dropping into the valley a following the Nidderdale Way south

Seahorse No:283

Go through gate at SE 6040 9065 and then 62p uphill. Now go 160º 3p past wall to large old tree with rock on RHS. Go to the back of the rock to find moss covered stone which can be removed to reveal box in hole under rock.

Sightings No:216

High above Nidderdale, arriving at Sandy Hill trig point last, add the "S" number on it's plaque to the number on Ouster Bank. Now take away the number on Kettlestang, so that you are left with a four figure number. Swap the first two numbers with the last two. This is now a grid reference, a point from where, two kilometres to the west is your next destination, a structure. With your back against the structure, look to the Cleveland Hills on 60o. Box at 20p in a cluster of rocks/heather. Congratulations, you've earned it (unless you cheated).

Sickener, The No:284

From footbridge beside ford at SE 608 903 follow main track 340º 162p to large moss covered stump on LHS. Now 330º 13p to holly bush in ditch, then 12p 210º to oak tree with small holly beside. Stand facing tree and main track. At LHS base of trunk is a large stone near roots. Box tucked in behind stone.

Signpost, The SE -- -- No:39 REVISED CLUE Reported refurbished 12/9/06

From junction of ancient road where once stood a signpost which pointed to Stokesley 16 miles. DO REST AS WIDE track is followed to a large upright stone slab on the left. Cont. onwards to 2nd cart-track on L. from where a group of trees can be seen nearby on 300o. Take this track, initially on 220o about 77p to group of stones just after tumulus on R. Cont. along track initialy on 230o about 50p and make your way to fallen corner of wall on R. From this corner 178o 7p to box behind sloping stone slab on botom LHS of disused grouse butts.

Six Miles To Paradise No:43 REPORTED WATERLOGGED

From trig. pillar on Black Hambleton SE 48 94 follow track W'ly to junc. with Hambleton Street. Next walk along the Drovers Road, initially on 360o to bp sign to Nether Silton. Go through gate to middle large boulder. From here 330o 24p to fallen pine roots, then 4p 110o to box at base of pine trees.

Smout Hole NZ 805 035 No:54 REPORTED MISSING

Starting at smout hole in wall, 14p 140o from gate across road, go on 240o to bp opposite standing stone with hole in top. Follow bp until obvious winding track disappears, just after reservoir becomes visible on L. Take track initially on 162o ,120p to boulder on L of track, then 40p 134o to a group of rocks, again on L of track. Box behind stone under horizontal rock.

Stingray No:182 Revised Clue Reported OK 17/8/05, but book with box called "Forest Ban 4" Reported as no large tree recognised, only tree seen approx 50 yards from road 21/4/06.

Almost on same site as Long Distance Acorn. From large lone tree at roadside just N of Spindle Thorn (which is falling down) go due North to rutted path.20o 60p to green boggy dip on RHS.50p on 60o over bank to box under large flat rock with footprints on it.

If you've beaten the drum, then from my local inclination, you could be destined for the top! Keep an eye open and we will meet on the path, ahead. You'll know me when you see me face to face. Now go 300o 20p to a large prone boulder (please recover box carefully).

Summit No:211

Start at the highest point on the North York Moors, from where you can see Roseberry Topping. Walk on 340o until you get to a semi-circular stone shelter. A lovely view! At the back of the shelter, look around the base of a large triangular rock.

From large cairn walk 7p on 240o to large sloping rock, then 23p on 190o round edge of rocks. Box is tucked deep under left hand edge of huge sloping boulder behind stone.

Tarka's Travels - North Yorkshire no:319

Tarka has settled near some hills that bear the name of his kind. Park at Bank Foot (NZ59 06) and follow the gravel track up Ingleby Bank until a grassy semi-circle on right hand side. If you reach a chain across the path you've gone too far. The semi-circle has a small group of rocks above it, Tarka is hiding under the 1st large rock on the right.

From junc. at SE 948 891 go on 170o to Xrides. Go back 350o , 14p to 2nd pine on R. From here 17p 60o to bilberry patch in middle. Next 4p 130o to holly, then about 9p 70o to stump. If you go down to Spring Wood today, you're sure of a big suprise. At Reasty Bak Top cp take bp on 220o. Turn 1st.R at gate/boundary stone and walk to fork. Take track, initially on 275o, round bend and cont. on main track, ignoring side tracks, to gate marked 'Heights Farm Only'. Follow track through gate, S to signpost marked Reasty/Highdales. Then 25o 6p to large log. Box under log, on signpost side. (The log at the end of the clue has ben removed and the box has been tucked away under a tuft of grass and covered with bark on site.)

Whilst visiting Nidderdale, it would be ruidd not to visit this temple. From the only entrance, head 280o along a wide path to outlying stone structure on the crest of the ridge. Continue on 280o down to the gate. 185o 40p along wall side path 90o 10p to pyramid rock. Look under flat rock to the left.

Too Late For Tea SE -- -- No:62 REFURBISHED 2006 With amended clue

The rabbit was late, too late for tea, so he sat down on the seat near the cp to recover from the rush. Looking down the brow he could see the holes where his friends made the bread and cakes. Deciding to return home the rabbit hopped along the road on 80 degrees past the overgrown trig pillar to the 3rd ride on the R. From here he went 86p 170 degrees to an avenue of trees on the R, with small open area. Next he hopped 18p 210 degrees to the pine tree on the RS. This pine tree is on the LHS of the holly bushes. His home is under thin cover of pine leaves at the rear base of this tree. To find it stand facing the back of the tree, with the holy buses now on your LHS. Blue, Black, Brown and Green colours needed.

Western Moors Cuckoo Nest No 267 Reported OK 13/10/07

This is a new type of letterbox - a cuckoo nest, it is constantly hatching cuckoos. As they leave the nest there are always more hatching (instructions included in the box)

STACEY & KEN set off down the road on 170o and walked to the end of the small wood on the right. From 1st gate and wall on R, 9p 340o to sycamore tree. From here make your way as best you can to the 2nd large old sycamore tree along the wall on 236o, roughly 56p. Stand facing tree and wall, go around te RHS of the tree. From Sneck Yate go southerly along the Cleveland Way to first large grassed  excavation on the right of the track. Go to prominent group of rocks at the start of the excavation. From this outcrop the box is located under a collection of small stones 2 paces away on 290°

Wind Hill SE 60 92 No:127 Reported in good condition 10/9/03 Revised clue

From tree in lowest corner of intake wall, follow bp 90p 240o to beginning of fp which crosses Wind Hill. Take this fp, initially on 240o, 190p to where the bilberry changes to heather moorland. Follow bilberry covered ditch due N 69p. Box under LH corner of boulder 3p 238o. From box: gateway of intake 20o and wall 90p 350o.

Wren Box No:110 Reported wet book 10/10/05

Find 2 uprightish boulders beside low track on SW side of Crabdale Beck, about 80p 320o from 3 groups of trees at junction with Ingdale Beck and Sike SE 4795 9885. From these 2 boulders go 162o 40p to another upright boulder. Standing above this boulder go 2p 95o to box under prone slab.

The box is to be found South of the folly, in the gully between shooting shelter 3 and 4, under largest of two boulders.

Yorkshire Rose of Rosedale SE 721 949 No:1 Reported OK 21/4/06

Make your way to ironwork kiln arches on Rosedale Chimney Bank Top. From 8th arch (N) take 70p 350o along track. Go 3-5p down bank on RHS. Box under large slab of stone against bank face. From box: cottage chimneys due N. Farm across valley can be seen on 94o.

21st Century Box No:221 SE ??? ???Reported OK 12/9/06

From the first box to be put out on the North York Moors in the 20th Century, follow the track initially on 330o to the dismantled railway line. Continue along the railway line, past the green gate, until you come to the 21st Century bench on the R, overlooking the wonderful Rosedale Abbey. From this bench approx 56p down track due N to wall corner on R. From this corner 4p 217o to large boulder. Box under stones beneath. Now New Improved Stamp!

303 Celebration  Box. No 303 SE -- --

This box has been planted to celebrate 303 letterboxes listed on the Yorkshire Cluelist. WAKEN ANT BEGs, for the second time. There are too many cars here, they will squash you! Follow the footpath away from the cars until you reach the useless gate post. Now follow the disused fence posts along the moor boundary to the multi trunked silver birch which is between a concrete and a wooden post. Stand with your back to the moor. Box is at the base of the concrete post on the LHS of the birch, under the heather on the tree side of the post. Purple and Green ink needed
